Beyond the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Edited by Linda S de Vries and Inge-Lot van Haastert, Department of Neonatology, Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital, Utrecht, The Netherlands
Questions often asked in the NICU are “œwhat will my baby be like when he/she is a child; will he/she walk and be able to attend mainstream school?”
The aim of this video-atlas is to share the stories of 27 children with you. They were all admitted to our NICU and were monitored with aEEG, had early and late neuro-imaging, both cranial ultrasound and neonatal MRI and often an MRI in infancy and childhood. They were seen in the follow-up clinic, most of them till at least 5 years of age. At most visits to the clinic, short videoclips were made.
The book will include the stories of children with
- large GMH-IVH (n=4)
- cystic-PVL (n=7)
- perinatal stroke (n=8)
- hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (n=8)
and a CD with all the video-clips. For 5 of the children, an interview was done when they were adolescents or adults (14-22 years).
